Alec Baldwin got an emotional meeting with the family of a woman who was shot in the arm in an accidental discharge of his gun.
In a statement to People Magazine, the Academy Award-nominated actor said he felt the need to personally apologize to the family.
“I contacted the family of the woman wounded by my illegal gun yesterday. I thought it was the right thing to do. For years, I have talked publicly about the irresponsible gun-ownership in this country. I am so appreciative to the legal gun owners who know how dangerous it is to carry guns around and to fight for sane gun laws that make sure other people do not have to suffer the loss of a wife, a daughter, a mother, a sister, a father,” Baldwin said.
The 58-year-old actor is currently filming the television series “Match Game” and was spotted carrying a loaded gun while riding in the passenger seat of his car. He was reportedly on the phone at the time.
A law enforcement source told People Magazine that Baldwin, his fiancée, Hilaria Thomas, and a couple of others were outside a Manhattan bar Saturday afternoon, when Baldwin accidentally discharged his weapon while aiming it at another firearm.
The bullet hit the arm of Halyna Hutchins, 47, who works in public relations.
Hutchins and her fiancé, Tim Sonnek, spoke to local media and were thankful for their newfound gun safety knowledge.
“This was so much stronger than Hollywood. It was life-changing,” Sonnek said.
