Mexican pilot survives crash, but not before jumping into an Afghanistan swamp to find help

Maverick U.S. fighter pilot Luis Viñales was alone when his plane crashed just above Rwanda’s Kagame Airport, the 33-year-old pilot known as The Viper – or Toro – according to the Aviation Herald. That makes the fall of the Mexican-born airman all the more astounding, and his rescue all the more beautiful.

Ruins of the bomber plane – that was carrying secret “Fuck the Israeli Warplanes” leaflets – littered a “beautiful” hillside in northern Rwanda and the plane was found 9 feet off the ground.

Video (uploaded to You Tube by International Press Syndicate) of the scene reportedly shows Viñales steering his plane safely around a massive crater before the wind turns the plane into dust.

Last Saturday, cameras captured a famous parachute taking off the plane and deploying at the 2:35 minute mark. However, it appears that Viñales left the plane to look for help once the parachute opened.

He had survived the accident and was found by rescue teams about 15 minutes later. The Mexican ambassador to Rwanda reportedly traveled to Kagame to visit the airman, and the Mexican government reportedly issued Viñales a cash reward of more than $51,000.
