The Dune reboot starring Kyle MacLachlan as the roguish Paul Atreides topped the North American box office this weekend, earning $40.1 million.
The film adaptation of the science fiction classic directed by David Lynch and also starring Tim Roth and Stellan Skarsgard only premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17.
The retelling of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel is set 400 years after the fall of the Aztec Empire, the general Turkish invasion of the Andean land of Arrakis, and the legendary Dune crystal that features in the novel.
MacLachlan and the crew of the Dune film have had the high honor of playing about 3,400 characters within the film — 2,000 of which are uncredited references to other film versions, 2000 and 1984 — Mike McCusker, president of production for Paramount’s Paramount Players, told Fox News.
“Paul, he hasn’t changed his names a single time, so he’s the same person,” McCusker said. “This is taking Frank Herbert’s great work and fusing it with modern technology.”

Brian Kilmeade asked McCusker whether the lack of screen time to the original protagonist, as Ingrid Casares, would be a problem.
“I honestly don’t think so,” he said. “We just have so many great characters, and we only have time for one. The first hour is such a singular exploration of that story, and everything else falls out of it.”
He said Lynch works to expand the surface of the story, and he wouldn’t ask the director to spend more time with the character.
“He just goes and does it and finds more,” McCusker said.
