A gun discharged accidentally after Alec Baldwin shot himself at a film studio shooting on Sunday night, an off-set source has confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter.
Baldwin’s publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
In footage released on Sunday, the actor can be seen at the end of a four-foot ladder firing a gun at the buttocks of actress Halyna Hutchins. He also appears to throw the object at the ceiling after firing it, sending plumes of smoke and an object flying through the air before a producer quickly raises the ladder and tries to put the gun back in the chamber.
That same shot was fired again at Cardi B’s face and multiple shots could be heard when the camera moved to her back. Baldwin looked away from the camera and didn’t appear to realise the explosion had sent the object flying in the air.
“That was supposed to be for yourself [Hutchins],” he said to the producer. “You told me to put my finger up against the trigger. I tried to fire, but I didn’t. My arm gets really tight when I’m working. I’m so sad to lose my gun, I was such a happy gun owner.”
The two were filming a sketch for the Ellen DeGeneres Show, which airs on Monday. Baldwin and Hutchinson were both present.
Baldwin thanked Ellen on Monday for broadcasting footage of the shooting. “Last night was not a good time,” he tweeted. “I do my best job trying to protect my family and the loved ones they love.”
The shooting is not the first time Baldwin’s training as a commando has resulted in an accident. In 2011, his defence job caused an explosive chain of events on an aircraft when he lost control of the aircraft.
When people get on a plane to take off, they don’t expect an explosion of gunpowder that matches the noise of someone falling over: they don’t want to live through the other side. And in Baldwin’s case, the opposite happened – his dog panicked when Baldwin opened the door to take him off the plane and took off through the cabin at considerable speed. Baldwin was thrown out of the plane, but did not know that the dog was not on the left side of the aircraft.
Alphabet studios in Los Angeles was packed for the annual hurricane shoot. At the top of the stairs, in between filming the infamous Obama parody clip, Baldwin was shooting a gun in a black vest and was outside a stairwell.
“You’re shooting an empty gun for safety reasons,” said a spokeswoman for Universal Pictures when asked by the Hollywood Reporter. “We were filming a scene for Ellen’s show and it didn’t go as planned.”
