Jair Bolsonaro’s team has threatened to sue the company responsible for issuing the vaccine after the far-right presidential candidate said that he would not receive the inoculation.
The state governor’s team said on Twitter that he was seeking judicial authorization to sue BioVia, which makes the vaccine.
BioVia’s online newsletter on July 3 — a day after the candidate was sworn in as president — said that Bolsonaro would not be vaccinating himself against either measles or the strain of the virus called Covid-19.
“As for the subject of the President-elect not receiving vaccines, we decided to make a decision: It’s not, not for us,” the newsletter said.
The company made headlines last week after it featured a promotional video for a campaign offering a $1,051 (530 euros) emergency loan for parents whose children had been recently diagnosed with the most feared and potentially fatal childhood disease: measles.
However, the company subsequently apologized for using its message on social media without being clear about the economic benefits of the loan.
Neither BioVia nor Bolsonaro’s team have responded to a request for comment.
